Reduce Depth of Field with DV?
Hi. I’m trying to get a more film like look out of my crummy $200 camcorder (Canon ZR60.) I want to reduce the depth of field.
I’ve tried backing far away(around 50 feet) and zooming in real close. No real luck there, plus it is hard to record audio even with external microphones. Got any tips?
I’m using manual focus and f-stop by the way, also I’ve turned off digital zoom so it’s only optical.
If there is no real good answer that’s okay, but what about like lenses for a Canon GL2 or similar prosumer camera?
Unless you can manually set the f-stop on its lowest (like 1.4 or 2.8) you won’t be able to find that cinematic feel you are looking for. I’ve used the ZR60 before and I find that anything f4 and above doesn’t have shallow DoF.
But there are do it yourself projects for creating shallow DoF. Will cost a couple of $$$. Read up on this forum and look for 35mm adapters.

In simplistic terms, they take a lens, like a nikon 24mm 2.8, and slap it on any camcorder, even your ZR60. But this will reduce light coming onto the camcorder’s sensor so you will have to have a decent low-light camera to begin with or else this method will not work in low lighting.
I’m not a audiophile so I won’t be able to help you on the sound issue. Perhaps you may need a super directional mic for 50ft.
You can’t change lenses on the Canon GL2 but you can for the XL2.
